Applied Health Economics
Objectives
Learning outcomes of the curricular unit:
This teaching unit aims at familiarizing students with the application of economic tools to the understanding of the most relevant policy issues in this field. The unit is conducted entirely in English.
By following this teaching unit, students will be able to:
· Understand the essential economic concepts and methods relevant to the study of the health care sector;
· Examine and critically assess empirical studies in the areas of demand for health and health care, health care financing, and equity in health and health care;
· Apply this knowledge through the analysis of databases using statistical techniques, writing small scientific essays;
Critically analyze the new trends in scientific research in health economics.

Requirements for frequency
Knowledge of oral and written English; ability to discuss issues relating to the syllabus in that language.
Applicants must have followed the units “Economia da Saúde” or comparable courses.

Teaching method
Teaching methodologies
The teaching methods will be varied and adapted to the covered topic, including discussions and exercises.
Active participation is required during the sessions (oral presentations and active discussion of topics and exercises), during working group sessions (deeper investigation of the topics) and through individual contacts with the lecturers.
The students will also be asked to present an assignment about specific topics, which they choose in agreement with the lecturer.

· The financing of the health care sector: health expenditures and health outcomes, macroeconomic analysis;
· The demand for health: moral hazard, physician agency and supplier-induced demand;
· Payment of health care providers: incentives and behavior of individual providers and institutions;
· Identifying, measuring and valuing costs in health and social care;
· Applied health econometrics: interpreting results from empirical studies
· Equity in health care financing and delivery: methods and international comparisons;
Inequality in health outcomes: methods and international comparisons.
