NOVA Medical School

General

NOVA Medical School (NMS|FCM) celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2017.

NMS|FCM is an academic unit of Universidade NOVA de Lisboa and it currently has 1.719 students in the Integrated Master Degree in Medicine and 726 postgraduate students. It has a total of 533 professors and researchers.

The strategy of gradual integration of foreign teachers and researchers, combined with the number of international postgraduate students (12%) and mobility students (6%) reveals not only the opening of the Faculty abroad, but also the international projection it has been acquiring and which it intends to strengthen in the future.

In 2018 NMS|FCM reached, for the third consecutive year, the 1st position in the ranking of admissions to Higher Education, in Medicine, in the Lisbon Area. Also, 81,4% of the students chose NMS|FCM as their first option.

The new Bachelor's Degree in Nutrition Sciences, which opened the last school year for the first time, obtained the highest national access, along with other courses from NOVA and had 60% of students placed in the 1st option.

t is the Medical School with the best teacher/student ratio (1/3) in the clinical years in Portugal and its students have had excellent results in the exam of access to specialty.

NMS|FCM is associated with several health units, allowing a variety of teaching environments and a more comprehensive knowledge of hospital reality and primary health care. Furthermore, the University Medical Centre of Lisbon (Centro Médico Universitário de Lisboa - CMUL), which is a Consortium between NMS|FCM and Centro Hospitalar de Lisboa Central (CHLC), grants the students of NMS|FCM a better and more integrated clinical training.

Research is another case of success in our Medical School. The School’s Research Facilities hold the Library, the Clinical Competence Training Center (NOVA MedSim), CEDOC - Centro de Estudos de Doenças Crónicas (Chronic Diseases Research Center) and TOXOMICS - Centro de Toxicogenómica e Saúde Humana (Centre for Toxicogenomics and Human Health).

NMS|FCM was recently awarded with the Ministry of Health Gold Medal for Distinguished Services.

In July 2015, NOVA Medical School|Faculdade de Ciências Médicas and Centro Hospitalar de Lisboa Central (CHLC) signed the consortium that created the University Medical Centre of Lisbon (Centro Médico Universitário de Lisboa - CMUL). This consortium grants the students of NMS|FCM a better and more integrated clinical training, stimulates the development of clinical research and offers better conditions for lifelong learning to the health professionals.
