Clinical Imagiology and Anatomy

Objectives

To develop and understand the basic principles of human anatomy through imaging of certain parts of the human body. The evaluation of different anatomic regions will be performed through several imaging techniques.

 

The main purposes of the course are:

a)  to review the Anatomy basis lectured throughout the first year

b)  to learn the areas of the body where clinical problems arise

c)  to diagnose structural problems and to realize simple clinical procedures that are eligible to the students

d) to use technical imaging methods for evaluation of normal anatomy and variants and the main pathological syndromes

e) to learn appropriateness criteria in imaging of common clinical problems and emergency medicine

Teaching method

Lectures - 32 h.  Lectures-practical classes - 40 h.

Evaluation method

DISTRIBUTED EVALUATION – final weight of 50%.

During time schedule of classes and obtained by adding classifications of the following three evaluation components. Final result of the addition of the three components requires a minimum of 10 values to be eligible to final examination and approval of the curricular unit.

 

Imaging Evaluation:

 

Intermediate evaluation: Work project orally presented by the group. Weighting of 30% of distributed evaluation.

Final evaluation: subtitling images shown. Weighting of 35 % of distributed evaluation

 

Anatomy evaluation of subtitling images. Weighting of 35% of distributed evaluation.

 

FINAL EVALUATION - EXAM: Written test with a final weight of 50%.

Subject matter

Introduction, Physical basis of Radiation, Legislation of Imaging in Portugal, Dose Radiation of commonest studies, Semiotics, Terminology  and contrast media in Imagiology.

Appropriateness criteria and protocols, safety, other complications in imaging (contrast media, intervention, magnetic resonance, results management and expectations).

 

 

Brief introduction to Nuclear Medicine; Concepts of functional, metabolic and molecular imaging.

Imaging of the Child and Pregnancy and in Emergency Medicine. Concise introduction to Nuclear Medicine; concepts of metabolic, molecular and functional imaging.

Imaging and clinical correlation with main pathological syndromes.

Anatomy and Imaging of the Thorax, Abdomen and Pelvis, Head and Neck, Vertebral Column, Upper and Lower Limbs.
