Anthropology and Colonialism - 2nd semester
Objectives
a)- Students should be able to demonstrate a critical understanding of colonialism,
from the perspective of the colonized and colonizer;
b)- Students will be knowledgeable about the effects of Portuguese colonial rule upon african cultures;
c)- Students will be able to explain the historical influence of colonialism in the development of portuguese anthropology;
d)- Students should be able to evaluate the role of portuguese anthropology in development of colonial rule system.

Teaching method
One hour lecture followed by one hour tutorial class discussions devoted to the theme and central question of the lecture.
Evaluation method
Assessment of Linguistic Anthropology is based on two elements:
- written examination taken during the exam period - 70%;
- continuous assessment (attendance to lectures and participation in class discussions) - 30%.

1. Introduction: Colonialism, definitions and concepts.
2. Histories of Colonialism & Historiography: the portuguese colonial system.
3. Colonialism and the Production of Knowledge: the \"scientific occupation\" of the portuguese colonies.
4. The colonial anthropology in Mozambique: 4 case studies.
4.1. The physical anthropology of \"Missão Antropológica de Moçambique\" (1936-1955);
4.2. The codification of costumary law of \"Missão Etognósica de Moçambique\" (1941-1944);
4.3. The anthropological evaluation of the portuguese colonial officers in Mozambique (1945-1960);
4.4. The applied anthropology of \"Missão de Estudos das Minorias Étnicas do Ultramar Português\" (1957-1960).
5. Post-colonial criticisms.
