Museology

Objectives

1) To understand introductory concepts on museology and to relate them with cultural heritage in different contemporary contexts.
2) To analyse different concepts such as cultural heritage, museum and museology in order to understand diversity in the museology and patrimonial contemporary projects.
3) To understand the patterns in the concepts of cultural heritage. Comparative analysis. Intangible UNESCO Heritage.

Teaching method

Classes are divided into two parts. In the first one, we do the theoretical presentation of a specific problem related to the historical context of the museological production. In the second part we will project film and photographic material, ending with discussion and participation of the
students.

Evaluation method

The evaluation process involves: a report of the exhibition visited (40%) and written work of 5 pages (40%). It is important the attendance of students, as well participation and sharing of results in class (20%).

Subject matter

1) Anthropology and Museology. Ethnographic collections versus the Art collections.
2) Heritage, a conceptual look. Relations with different scientific backgrounds. Diversity in the contemporary patrimonial projects. Historical aspects. Concepts of museum - space, archives and society.
3) Different documentation systems: inventory, cataloging.
4) Relations with the public: interpretation, exhibitions and publicity. Construction of an exhibition. Space, documents.
5) Museum as a place of celebration of the nation to the museum as a space for affirmation of ethnic, professional and cultural identities.
6) The transformation of the museum from knowledge transmission to a place of experience.
7) Museums and ethical issues - the question of restitution of objects.
8) Ways to expose and ways of seeing. The ethnographic-museum practice in Portugal. Presentation of case studies.
