Objectives
To give an overview of how German became a national language;
to outline and apply key linguistic concepts and tools to describe German: the phoneme; from morpheme to the word (word formation processes); from word to text (taking into account syntactic, semantic and pragmatic levels);
To describe different modalities (written and oral) and registers (formal and informal);
To describe contemporary varieties of German;
