History of Modern Portugal (17th-18th Century) - 2nd semester
Objectives
1) Relate the different spatio-temporal dimensions of the History of Modern Portugal.
2) Identify the political processes, economic, social and cultural more influential that developed in Portugal in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
3) Know the main historiographical interpretations of the subjects studied.
4) Knowing the basic bibliography of the subject and be able to work with historical documents of the same.
5) Develop communication skills both oral and written integrating a specific vocabulary and categorais of the modern era.
6) Acquire knowledge that enable the student to a further in-depth studies of the modern era.

Teaching method
The teaching methodology is based on two dimensions. First, a speech teacher in each class, allowing an overview of the
topic and its consequences historiographical with calls attention to the large document databases. In this context leads to
the involvement of students through exercises like presentations citation or reference to the methods and content of the
research work. Second, the progress of the evaluation process, conceiving evaluation as a learning process that allows the
use of soft skills to make history.
Evaluation method
The evaluation is structured according to three areas: consolidating (30%),
comprising a writing test performed followed by an oral presentation and justified from a set of citations; construction
(20%), constituted by the presence in class and participation in cultural activities close to the themes of the program;
research (50%), followed route of preparing a research paper from document databases.

I. Events, life histories and conjunctures. 1. Restoration of D.João IV (1640-1656). 2. D.Afonso VI and the Count of Castelo Melhor. D.Pedro, master of Infantado. 3. The Spanish Succession War (1702-1713), the Mehuen Treaty (1703) and the Limits Treaty (1750, Madrid). 4. Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo. 5. The Court of D.José I and D.Maria I.
II. Describing the kingdom and social groups. 6. How is the kingdom´s space? 7. How many men and women are there in the kingdom? Body, sex, disease and cure. 8. Farmers and fishermen. Landowners. Artisans, merchants and Marquis of Pombal´s business men . The estado do meio. 9. Courtesans: grandes, dames, prelates, king´s counsellors, judges of the High Court, state secretaries, overseas governors, ambassadors , military, confessors and maids of honour. The servants. 10.
