Introduction to Egyptian Hieroglyphs - 2nd semester

Objectives

This unit approaches all essential elements of the ancient Egyptian grammar. It shall explore the language´s historical and linguistic backgrounds and proceed to debate its structure. The student shall be able to undertand a basic vocabulary and to read simple nominal, adjective, adverbial and pseudo-verbal sentences, including funerary formulae.

Teaching method

Every promote the debate of contents from each chapter of the required grammar. The debate include the demonstration of all its examples. Homework will be eventually corrected at the beginning of following class. A guided visit to the Calouste Gulbenkian Egyptian collection will be booked for the end of the semester.

Evaluation method

The evaluation consists of two formal exams and a series of small vocabulary tests during the semester.

Subject matter

Understanding the historical and linguistic context of the ancient Egyptian language; Non-verbal sentence elements: substantives, adjectives, pronoums, prepositions, adverbs, particles, numerals, verbal morphology; non-verbal sintaxe; basic funerary formulae.
