Education objectives

1)Understanding of the specificity of sociological knowledge in relation to other social sciences and common sense knowledge;
2)Knowledge and understanding of the principal concepts and theoretical approaches of Sociology;
3)Knowledge and understanding of sociological approaches to different topic areas of scientific and professional application;
4)Ability to communicate sociological knowledge in an accurate and significant form to specialists and non-specialists;
5)Knowledge and understanding of the principles and applications of the main strategies, methods and techniques of sociological research;
6)Ability to select and apply, under scientific supervision, these concepts and tools to the analysis, problematisation and investigation of social phenomena and problems, taking into account the ethical and deontological implications of the investigation;
7)Ability to communicate the procedures, results and implications of the investigation in an accurate and significant form to specialists and non-specialists;
8)Skills necessary to undertake further training for specialisation purposes, professional qualification or to acquire new skills for basic research under supervision;
9)Scientific skills to perform training or teaching tasks, following the acquisition of additional pedagogic skills.

Degree pre-requisites

Duration: 3 years/6 semesters.
Students must perform 180 credits: 66 credits based in the compulsory curricular units, 84 credits in a set of elective optionals and 30 credits undertaken in free-elective optionals or in a minor of another scientific area. Every semester, the student may not sign up in more than 30 credits, respecting the precedence when these have been set. At the beginning of each semester, students will be advised of the curricular units to carry out in order to appropriate them to their academic career.
The undergraduate students can still benefit from the different mobility programmes in which FCSH/NOVA participates as Erasmus +, Almeida Garrett exchange programmes, among others, and participate in research within the research units of the Faculty.
The degree of “licenciado” corresponds to the level 6 of the NQF and EQF-National Qualifications Framework/European Qualifications Framework.

Students may be admitted to Higher Education through the National Competition for Access to Higher Education, special competitions/regimes and entry systems, re-enrolment systems, course changes and transfers. Evaluation rules

Students at FCSH are evaluated based on the work developed over a semester, based on class participation, presentation of written and oral tests and examinations. The result obtained either by continuous assessment or evaluation of the tests is expressed on a scale of 0 to 20. To be approved, students must have at least 10 points to pass, however, who fail have a second chance to repeat the exams. Repeat exam: Has access any student of 1st or 2nd cycle who has obtained the minimum grade of eight values per rounding in the final grade of the curricular unit.
