History of Art: Classical and Late Antiquity

Objectives

a) To differentiate Classical Art from Late Antiquity Art in current Portuguese territory
b) To analyze contemporary contexts of Antiquity Art
c) To get acquainted with the artistic heritage of Antiquity in Portugal
d) To pursue artistic persistences from Antiquity to contemporary times
e) To identify Antiquity Art testimonies in current Portuguese territory
f) To connect artistic contents of Antiquity art in Portugal with those regarding general Antiquity Art.
g) To implement the use of scientific research methods and techniques in the research of Classical and Late Antiquity evidences in Portugal.

Teaching method

Theoretical and practical
Classes will develop the issues listed in the Syllabus. The use of images will be the point of convergence of the theoretical lecture.
Students´ supervision in the selection of bibliography and development of academic assignments (Reading records; book reviews; school trips´ reports; observation sheets; oral and writing research work; oral discussion); supervision of the specific work of the Art historian regarding observation of images and direct contact with the artwork.

Subject matter

1.Transactions and assimilations between the mediterranean traditions and the cultures of the Portuguese territory since the prehistorical times to the Iron Age. Greek vases in Portugal
2.Notion of Romanization and Late Antiquity. The Roman administration of the territory and its relation with Art in different contexts: Classical, Late Antiquity, Suebi and Visigothic
3. The City. Roman ways of establishing urban planning in Portugal. The city in Late Antiquity. Cities with and without urban continuing
4. Urban, industrial, religious, thermal, domestic and performing Roman architecture. Christian topography in the ancient city
5.The ager. The landscape of the countryside. The architectonic evolution and functions of the uillae from roman classical times to Christianity
6.The sculpture. Roman models in current Portuguese territory: imported artworks and local workshops. The portrait. Religious pagan and christian sculpture
7.Mosaics, painting and so-called minor arts. New ideologies.
