Contemporary English Literature - 2nd semester


1) To become more knowledge-based and more learned in Contemporary English Literature.
2) To master the contextualization of authors and their works and to review the limits of literary history from modernism until today.
3) To develop the ability to perform textual analysis of literary works and to interpret selected texts of literary criticism thus becoming more skilled in discussing knowledge assimilated by developing their own critical discourse.
4) To carry out relevant bibliographical research in the field of literary studies proposed.
5) To acquire skills to produce written work, to prepare brief oral presentations and to discuss critically on the proposed contents.

Teaching method

Rationale and theoretical exposition on the main issues of the program. It is intended to give students a basis of work and access to readings which will allow them to acquire specific knowledge in this area.
Initial orientation of the students’ bibliographical research and critical reading of relevant theoretical texts, contributing to allow oral and/or written presentations.
Taking as its starting point the individual research students, the sessions will take a participatory perspective, focusing on reading, analysis, interpretation and discussion of previously selected texts.

Subject matter

1. Introduction to British literature of the twentieth century.
1.1. Contexts and perspectives.
1.2. Literature in Great Britain in the Age of Modernism.
1.3. Literature in Great Britain after Modernism: new trends; continuity and rejection.
2. Approaching British literature of the twentieth century and setting out general guidelines, from the specific study of certain authors, genres, literary trends and other relevant issues.
2.1. Poetry: poets of the early twentieth century, evoking the centenary of the First World War.
2.2. Narrative: novel developments in the first and second half of the twentieth century and the central issues addressed in the works of British literature throughout the century (eg, nation, identity, the human condition).
2.3. Critical discourse and views on the narrative: the writers, the critique of narrative and intertextualities.
