Portuguese Literature in the 19th Century - 1st and 2nd semester


Turma A
Acquire general knowledge of 19th century Portuguese literary history and specific knowledge of the works chosen for detailed analysis in class and of their critical bibliography. Students should also be able to connect Portuguese literature with a larger frame of post-romantic European literature. This course will enhance argumentative ability to participate in critical debates about 19th century literature, namely through the writing of an essay concerning one of the works studied in class.

Turma B
«Portuguese Literature of the 19th Century» aims to provide a general knowledge of the literary production of
the period, framing its various moments within the context of parallel European phenomena. It seeks to
identify theoretical antecedents (continuities and ruptures) from the readings and steered discussion of the
proposed bibliography texts. The student will achieve:
a) A general understanding of the production of the period, and will be able to frame some of its various
moments within the context of equivalent European phenomena;
b) To recognize the most significant texts of the chosen authors, their theoretical antecedents, detecting
continuities and ruptures supported with the guided discussion of passive bibliography;
c) To develop an autonomous research skills in Human Sciences, and be able to elaborate a oriented
monograph on a theme within this scientific area.

Teaching method

Turma A e B
Lectures (60%); class discussions and analysis of oral and written texts, presentation and discussion of student papers (40%).

Evaluation method

Turma A
Written midterm exam in the class (50%) and a final paper with no less than 5 and no more than 8 pages (50%).

Turma A
a) A critical review / commentary (up to 4,500 char./3 pages) to one of the theoretical texts of the bibliography
b) A background paper / Oriented Monograph (9,000 characters / 6 pages) on topic to be proposed (60%)
c) Oral presentation of background work with PPT and lectures (20%)
In case of final examination, the scheduled work will constitute half (50%) of the final grade.

- European Romanticism and some Portuguese particularities: ethnography or literature as national hermeneutics. A) Literary theory and Alexandre Herculanos narrative project. B) From the Poet´s myth to the reshaping of the novel, a reading of modern classics by Almeida Garrett.
- Camilo Castelo Branco and the poetics of the novel.
- Literature, anti-romanticism and cultural critique in the poetic and essayistic production of «Geração de 70».
- Realism and narrative in the fiction of Eça de Queirós.
- Cesário Verde and Camilo Pessanha: the problem of modernity in relation to poetry.
