History and Theory of the State in Portugal - 1st semester

Objectives

1. The state as a field of enquiry in political science: main traditions and authors.
2. The modern nation-state: concepts, dynamics and variance in historical western Europe.
3. The dynamical evolution of the Portugueses state since the beginning of the early modern period, from the point of view of the construction of a nation-state, specifically os the various processes of modernization, centralization and widening of scope, in its relation to the individual, the territory, the society and the economy.

10. The Old New State: crisis, failed transition and revolution
11. The democratic state: revolution, social policies and Europe: current trends and challenges
