Translation Practice in Science and Technology (Portuguese-Spanish) - 2nd semester

Objectives

a) Introducing to textual specificities of technical and scientific language.
b) Focusing on primarial and secondary translation problems, regarding Portuguese and Spanish.
c) Get acquainted with research methods and specific resources for translation.
d) Establish criteria to think about, analyse and assess the practice of translation
e) Developing adequate working habits and methods in order to translate.
f) Aknowledging the professional dimension of translation.

Teaching method

Theoretical classes (30%); Practical classes (70%).
Analysis of translations, translation of texts, correction of translations, practical analysis of problems and difficult items. Text comparison. Use of suitable tools.

Evaluation method

1. Regular translation work in the classroom, following prior preparation (30%).
2. Two translation tests (15 % each).
3. A final written exam (40%).
75% course attendance is mandatory.
Minimum Spanish language level of A2.2 is highly recommended.

Subject matter

1) Organizing and planning translations.
2) Documental resources and terminology research for texts in the scientifical and technical area.
3) Identifying specific problems in translation from Portuguese to Spanish. Contrastive analysis of both languages, in all levels. Translating strategies and making coherent decisions in order to solve problems.
4) Writing professionally several kinds of texts.
5) Analysing, revising and criticising translations.
