Translation Practice: Social and Human Sciences (Portuguese to English) - 1st and 2nd semester

Objectives

a) To acquire the competences required to translate from Portuguese into English
b) To acquire an understanding of the main domains of the humanities and social sciences
c) To reflect upon and improve strategies for solving the terminological and notional-cultural difficulties when translating Portuguese texts into English
d) To develop an awareness of stylistic similarities and differences at sentence and paragraph level between source and target texts
e) To acquire the ability to collate data and produce glossaries
f) To develop the ability to reflect upon and self assess your own translations
g) To further develop English language skills and linguistic competence

Teaching method

Presentation of the Social Sciences and Humanities to be explored;
Regular translation practice, identifying the problems raised by each text.

Evaluation method

Oral presentation of translations of previously assigned texts (50%);
A written test, done in class (50%).

1. General problems met when translating texts pertaining the Social Sciences and Humanities;
2. Translation of source language texts from the above-mentioned field;
3. Critical assessment and analysis of lexical/vocabulary choices, style, pragmatics, etc.
