Citizenship and Public Policy: How Immigrants fare between Power and Politics

Objectives

Develop the capacity to: 1. Reflect on the historical process of citizenship building in democratic and liberal regimes 2. Critical analysis of the politics aiming at \"diversity\" 3. Critically address public policies of integration and control of migrants and their offspring 4. Identify themes and build research questions 5. Communicate knowledge, through speach or writing, in synthetic and critical terms, while mobilizing relevant empirical and theoretical knowledge 6. Get to know how to work in interdisciplinary environments, while understanding the added-value of interdisciplinarity 7. Apply academic knowledge in non-academic environments, strengthening the ability to engage with decision makers, private actors and other stakeholders.

Teaching method

Some classes are based on theoretical exposés and others on practical exercises. The latter will consist in students´ presentation and discussion of their projected essay or research plan.

Evaluation and weighting for the final grade: continuous evaluation of the student´s participation in classes; presentation in class of the projected essay or work plan; written essay or work plan.
