Subject matter
Core theme: \"The Lisbon route - echoes of a Continent at war in the ´City of Light´\"
This seminar purports, in the first place, to offer students a panoramic view of Anglo-Portuguese cultural, political and diplomatic relations, putting a particular emphasis on the study of New State Portugal, and mainly on the period comprised between the beginning of the Spanish civil War and the allied victory in World War II. The focus of our programme will be the analysis of representations of Portugal in travel narratives, diaries, newspaper articles, novels and historiographic texts by coeval British authors. Some of them actually resided in our country but most of them simply crossed our country on their way to the United States, or stayed temporarily with very diverse agendas in mind. Among them there were tourists, expatriates, journalists, secret agents, academics, but mainly refugees trying to escape from a Continent at war and the German invasion of Western Europe.
