Subject matter

CULTURE AND ARTS: AT THE CENTRE, THE CITY
Urban realities or symbolic experiences, objects of desire or melancholy, Cities play a fundamental role in artistic creation and the imagination of those who inhabit them and spend time in them.
Drawing, painting, writing, filming, making music from the city or in the city allows us to see, read and hear cultural diversity in its various representations and, at the same time, the identity constructs of which they form part.
We will develop this Seminar around two cities - Madrid and Barcelona - and around two lines of study:
1. The city as a subject of artistic representation; images of the city.
2. The city as space-time for producing artistic representations.
Our starting point will be a body of work which we will diversify according to the proposed lines of research. To begin with, we will concentrate on literature, cinema and painting, without precluding any other kind of artistic production, such as architecture, photography, music, theatre, comic. Therefore, this is the initial body of work:
MADRID: Antonio Muñoz Molina’s novel La noche de los tiempos (2009); Antonio López’ s paintings and drawings; Pedro Almodóvar’ s films.
BARCELONA: Eduardo Mendoza’s novel La ciudad de los prodigios, de (1986); Gaudí, Modernist painting; Bigas Luna’s films.
