The City in nineteenth century culture - 2nd semester
Understand the intense transformations of the city as a consequence of liberal economy and industrial expansion; Discuss the models of urban development; Analyse the distinctive features of the emergent city-planning; Relate new social dynamics with the hierarchical shape of urban-architectural spaces; Understand the rituals of urban life in the city space and its cultural facilities; Examine and discuss the previous issues in the context of nineteenth-century Lisbon.

Seminar sessions will be both theoretical and practical. The participation of several invited experts is scheduled, and different field trips are also planned. Each student will elaborate his/her own essay project, in which he/she is expected to analyse specific urban spaces which prove to be challenging case studies for the seminar. A final presentation of these research papers will take place in class or in situ, in different parts of the city.
1. The City before the demographic growth, the economic development and the industrial revolution; 1.1. The birth of city planning and its core mentors. 2 Memory and Modernity: the invention of monuments and of monumental urban spaces; 2.2. Modernity and culture: museums and libraries as symbols of the new city; the great exhibitions; 2.3 Modernity and hygienism: the cult of gardens, parks and boulevards; 2.4.Modernidade and technicality: the transport revolution and the popularization of electric lighting; 2.5 Modernity and exclusion: the workers´ districts.
