PhD in Languages Teaching - Multilingualism and Education for a Global Citizenship

Education objectives

3rd-cycle course offered jointly by FCSH/NOVA and Universidade Aberta.

-To understand and systematize theoretical knowledge in the field of language learning;
-To develop research competences in methods specific to the areas of specialization in doctoral programme;
-To conceive of, design, develop, and produce original research work in the areas of specialization;
-To develop competences for analysis of sources and documents to produce innovative content and critical arguments;
-To present publicly academic research,both ongoing and finalized,in academic and social contexts;
-To contribute to social and cultural development through the production and dissemination of work in the context of language teaching;
-To reflect on the ethical,social,and cultural implications of the language teaching profession within the context of contemporary world issues and education for citizenship;
-To apply knowledge about teaching, learning, and methodological issues to the definition, management and critical evaluation of curricular structures and pedagogical practices.

Fees

The annual tuition fee for the school year of 2019/2020, for students who do not obtain scholarship from FCT or other public or private institutions, it is of € 1,400 (one thousand four hundred euros).

Degree pre-requisites

Length: 6 semesters. Total credits: 180 credits (60 from curricular units + 120 credits from the non teaching component). Non teaching component modalities: Thesis.
Number of credits as free-elective optionals: 10 credits. The free seminar optional can be chosen among curricular units from the postgraduate training offered by the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities (FCSH/NOVA) or Universidade Aberta, in other units of NOVA University of Lisbon, or other national or foreign Higher Education institutions under agreement or protocol.

The degree of “doutor” corresponds to the level 8 of the NQF and EQF-National Qualifications Framework/European Qualifications Framework.

For more information please consult:http://fcsh.unl.pt/escola-doutoral-en/doutoramentos To enrol in a doctoral programme, candidates must comply with national legislation, the institutional requirements of UNL and Universidade Aberta, and meet at least one of the following conditions: a) hold an MA degree or legal equivalent; b) hold an undergraduate degree and present a CV displaying particular scientific or educational aptitude for study of the course in question, as recognized by the Scientific Council of the FCSH/NOVA or Universidade Aberta; c) present a CV displaying particular scientific or educational aptitude for study of the course in question, as recognized by the Scientific Council of the FCSH/NOVA or Universidade Aberta.

Evaluation rules

The study course leading to the doctoral degree includes the completion of a doctoral program that consists of curricular unit aimed at training for research; the realization of an original thesis, designed especially for this purpose, appropriate to the branch of knowledge or expertise. The seminar curricular units type are classified on a scale of 0-20. The final classification of the PhD course is expressed by approved or not approved formulas. In case of approval, the final classification of the PhD course is expressed in the range 10-20 on a scale of 0-20, doing the arithmetic average of the marks in which the curricular units with 10 ECTS. The final classification of the thesis is expressed by formulas approved or refused by justified nominal vote with no abstentions.
