Urban Hydraulics
Objectives
Provide students with knowledge in design of water distribution and wastewater collection systems. Throughout the semester, students should acquire the following skills:
• Capacity in estimating design flows
• Capacity of knowledge of materials and accessories supplies used
• Capacity in the hydraulic calculation of flows in networks
• Capacity of knowledge and characterization of the components of the networks
• Capacity in more sustainable ways of managing networks
• Capacity of designing the different organs of the systems

Prerequisites
The curricular unit does not have any formal pre-requisites although students should have knowledge in the fields of pressure and free-surface flow. Taking into account the applied component, students are asked to have basic knowledge in the use of CAD software (ex: AutoCad) and spreadsheet programs (ex: Excel).

Evaluation method
The evaluation includes two evaluation elements:
- Theoretical/Practical evaluation: 2 tests or final exam final (60% of the final grade)
- Project (40% of the final grade)
To have frequency, the students must be present at least in 2/3 of practical classes and have an average grade of at least 9.5 in the lab works TP1 to TP4. The frequency is valid for one year.
Having this frequency, the final grade is calculated by the maximum of:
NFtests = 0.3 x T1 + 0.3 x T2 + 0.1 x TP1 + 0.1 x TP2 + 0.1 x TP3 + 0.1 x TP4
and
NFexam = 0.6 x E + 0.1 x TP1 + 0.1 x TP2 + 0.1 x TP3 + 0.1 x TP4
where:
T1 and T2 – Grade of test 1 and 2
E – Grade in the exam
TP1 to TP4 – Grade in the lab works 1 to 4
Subject matter
The unit plan comprises the hydraulic design of the following three systems:
- Water supply systems;
- water distribution systems;
- Drainage systems
The plan covers the following main subjects:
- Project horizon, phased project and construction;
- Population evolution calculation, analytical methods of demographic components;
- Estimation and calculation of water demand and consumption;
- Peak factor and reduction factor, sewage flow and hydrology revision (pluvial flow calculations);
- Water supply system equipment: intake structures in surface and groundwater sources (types, conception and dimensioning);
- Water transport systems (gravitational and non-gravitational), general conception, design of water mains, technical and economical dimensioning of conduits;
- Conception and dimensioning of pump station systems (civil construction, equipment and electrical facilities);
- Design and remote operation of water distribution and pump station systems;
- Water distribution reservoirs design; water supply networks design;
- Drinking Water treatment basics. Sewage water and pluvial water drainage systems; types of systems, conception and dimensioning of conduits and pump station systems;
- General notions on sewage water treatment.
