Energy and Environment Processes
Objectives
The course aims to provide theoretical and practical knowledge about processes in the environment and energy, since concepts and definitions, the ability to solve problems related to reaction kinetics, hydraulic models, reactor types and the application of mass balances in steady state. At the end the student should :
- Understand and know the key environmental processes, identify critical aspects which relate for example to the sampling points, depending on the type of reactor that may be in question - will also be able to balance simplified industrial processes in the solid phase, liquid and gas.
Understanding basic concepts in the area of energy, and the processes involved in energy transformation, as in the production of electricity from renewable and non- renewable. Perform calculations and solve problems that demonstrate knowledge of the energy system and to assess the environmental sustainability and energy balances analyze the global, national, or a city.

Teaching method
Teaching methods are based on the combination of theoretical lectures, where the fundamental principles and concepts are introduced, with practical lectures where students develop their competencies. The latter include the presentation of homeworking and practical exercises on the course topics. Research and autonomous study are strongly encouraged
Evaluation method
Evaluation comprehends two elements: 1) Test (55%); 2) Report and discussion of assigment "performance of water heating system" (45%).
The participation in the discussion is valued. Delays in submitting asssignments and unjustified absence in mandatory classes are subject to penalties.
Subject matter
Basic concepts in the area of environmental processes and systems. Reaction rates in elementary processes; Identification of reaction order. Modeling ideal systems; modeling non-ideal systems, introduction to mass balances in steady state: solid phase, liquid phase, with a component of the gas phase and recycling and purging. Using quantitative diagrams and simplified diagrams of equipment.
