Applied Organic Synthesis

Objectives

The central objective of this course is to prepare and equip students with the necessary tools and essential to program and propose the most suitable synthetic routes to synthesise new organic compounds.

At the end of this course the student will have acquired knowledge, skills and expertise to design new synthetic routes for organic molecules and synthesise the organic molecules in the laboratory. Be able to interpret the results, correct and change the approaches and develop observation skills and scientific knowledge.

Teaching method

Course essentially a method of practical teaching in laboratory work.

Evaluation method

• The evaluation in Applied Organic Synthesis is continuous and includes the following components:

1- Review of the literature on the chosen theme with the accomplishment of an ante-project. (2000-2018)

2- Presentation of the work to be done to reach the product.

- Retrosynthesis

- Mechanisms of reactions.

- Procedure to be used.

- Prediction of purification methods.

- Characterization of products. Prediction of IR, 1HNMR and 13CNMR spectra.

3- Carrying out the planned laboratory work

4- Delivery of a report

•20% for the previous presentation of the work.
•40% for written work.
•20% for the laboratory component
•10% for writing the labbook and labeling of reactions.
•10% for the final report.

Subject matter

Developing a plan for the synthesis of a complex organic molecule and its experimental realization.
