Biomedical Engineering
Education objectives
Biomedical Engineering is a multi-purpose area that applies the principles, methods and tools of science, technology and engineering to analyze and solve problems in medicine and biology, to develop innovative approaches to instrumentation in prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease thus providing a general improvement in health care and the actual knowledge of the human body.
This engineering is innovative and high growth, being named one of the most important areas of science this century.
The major areas of Biomedical Engineering are: Biocompatibility, Biomaterials, Biomechanics, Biosensors, Biotechnology (Engineering Cell, Tissue and Gene), prosthetic devices and artificial organs, Biological effects of electromagnetic fields, Electrophysiology, Clinical Engineering, Rehabilitation Engineering, Transport Phenomena transportation, medical image (inc. Nuclear Medicine and PET), Medical Informatics, Biomedical Instrumentation (inc. Lasers in Medicine), physiological modeling, simulation and control, Nanotechnology, Processing and Analysis of medical and biological signals, Ionizing Radiation, and Radiation Protectionradiological.
Applications Engineers to the profile of Biomedical Engineering, with expertise in biology and medicine, are growing rapidly. Examples of career opportunities are pointed out:
- Equipment companies and medical instrumentation.
- Companies pharmaceutical material.
- Hospitals in the areas of hospital physics, clinical engineering and maintenance of equipment.
- Research and development laboratories of large companies.
- And pharmaceutical industry analysis.

Evaluation rules
The following modes of evaluation are used with regard to academic qualifications:
- Evaluation based solely on an examination or completion of a final project.
- Evaluation based on work done throughout the semester excluding examination or final project. In these courses students can expect to carry out, for example, laboratory activities, mini-tests, tests, individual or group projects, seminar-related activities, any combination of which will be used to determine the final grade.
- Evaluation based obligatorily on an examination or a final project. In these courses there extists a form of evaluation similar to one of the aformentioned activities in paragraph 2 as well as a form of evaluation based on a final exam.
- Evaluation based on work done throughout the semester with the possibility of foregoing an examination or a final project.
The final Dissertation (or Project) involves a public discussion with a Jury.
