PostGraduate in Information Management and Business Intelligence in Healthcare

Education objectives

The postgraduate program in Information Management and Business Intelligence in Healthcare is a joint initiative of four units of the Universidade NOVA de Lisboa: NOVA Information Management School, National School of Public Health, NOVA Medical School and the Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. This initiative also has the support of ACSS - Central Administration of the HealthSystem, the ARS LVT – Administração Regional de Saúde de Lisboa e Vale do Tejo, ABBVIE, EY and SAS.

This program is ranked as the best program in Health Management in Portugal, the 2nd in Europe and the 4th in the World by Eduniversal, an international agency that publishes the annual ranking of the best MBA and Master programs in the world.

This program aims to train managers and professionals who wish to use information and knowledge management to promote the competitiveness of healthcare organizations. The program covers several themes ranging from innovation processes management to the use of analytical tools, grounded in the principles of information management and BI processes.

This postgraduate program is for anyone who has a relevant undergraduate degree and wishes to acquire skills in information management, knowledge management and Business Intelligence in healthcare. Amongst the possible target group of this postgraduate program, those who have duties in marketing, planning and control, quality control, information systems, sales and logistics, human resources and technical staff and managers who work in areas that support decision making, stand out in the admission process. It is also for healthcare professionals, responsible for services management as well as managers and leaders in healthcare, who need to develop studies or Business Intelligence projects.

The goal of this program is to train technical staff and managers to:

- Meet the challenges of the new healthcare market using the instruments of planning and management control in healthcare organizations;

- Know and manage the processes of innovation and change, aswell as customer relationships in the new healthcare market;

- Introduce the principles of Information and Knowledge Management to promote the competitiveness of organizations working in the health sector;

- Understand the process of Business Intelligence and manage theinfrastructure components of BI - people, processes, and technologies;

- Use analytical applications monitoring the performance of organizations, and identify key indicators of the analytical applications in healthcare.

The postgraduate program gives access to the master degree program in Information Management, with a specialization in Knowledge Management and Business Intelligence, upon the development and presentation of a scholarly thesis, work project or a internship, and the approval of the following course units:

  • Business Intelligence I;
  • Business Intelligence II;
  • Data Mining I;
  • Data Mining II;
  • Decison Support Systems;
  • Knowledge Management;
  • Research Methodologies.

Note: the enrollment in the postgraduate program allows the student to enroll in ten course units.

Degree pre-requisites

To earn the postgraduate program diploma in Information Management and Business Intelligence in Healthcare , students complete 60 ECTS, of which 37,5 correspond to the mandatory course units, and the remaining 22,5 correspond to the elective course units offered by NOVA IMS, ENSP-NOVA and IHMT-NOVA.

Conditions of admittance

The requirements for the applications are: a degree in a compatible field (complete until February 2019); analysis of the applicants' academic and professional curriculum.
