Seminário em Epidemiologia

Objectives

Describe the national and international epidemiological situation of diseases and health problems, its determinants and trends;

- Critically assess the epidemiological approaches most adequate to the study of the main health problems and determinants, including study designs and epidemiological measures involved;

- Meet the principles of spatial and temporal analysis;

- Meet the principles of sampling of populations;

- Define the concept of risk, its main variants, being able to interpret your meaning in different types of epidemiological study and their implications;

Describe the concepts and applications of bias, confounding, interaction and effect modification, and its use in design, analysis and interpretation and epidemiological studies, as well as in the discussion of causality;

- Be able to present a critical appraisal of a protocol of and epidemiological investigation and an epidemiological report, including scientific papers.

Teaching method

 

This course has two components: a theoretical review the purpose of specific health problems and a practical preparation and presentation of critical reviews of actual work. The seminar format will, for each theme: a first session with review of national and international epidemiological situation, followed by individual and group work, presented orally and in writing for evaluation. 

 

Evaluation method

The assessment includes the following components:

  • Attendance and participation of every student in the classroom sessions, including oral presentations in room: 20%;

  • classification of two written essays (5 to 10 pages each) selected from concrete methodological and thematic themes, arising from face-to-face sessions: 30% (15% each);

  • critical appraisal of an article, or report of an epidemiological investigation (15 to 20 pages) : 50%

  • Critical appraisal of epidemiological studies;

  • Spatial analysis in public health;

  • Theory and practice of sampling; Epidemiological measures: definition, calculation and interpretation: the specific case of health and epidemiological risk indicators;

  • Causal assessment.
