Pathophysiology and Therapeutic Targets II
Objectives
The Pathophysiology and Therapeutic Targets curricular unit aims at integrating knowledge of pathophysiology and pharmacology, organized by organs and systems (except CNS) as well as the application of the general principles of pathophysiology, pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics already acquired.
At the end of the course the student should be able to demonstrate:
Knowledge of the causes and mechanisms that explain the manifestations found in major diseases and the mechanisms of action of drugs, from a perspective that goes from the system to the molecule.
Critical reasoning skills applied to the interpretation of pathophysiological and pharmacological mechanisms.
Information search skills to make appropriate use of available resources for learning pathophysiology and pharmacology.
Ability to work in groups, to expose their knowledge and to participate actively and appropriately in tutorial sessions.

The International Union of Basic and Clinical Pharmacology (IUPHAR) / British Pharmacological Society (BPS) Guide to PHARMACOLOGY is an expert-curated resource of ligand-activity-target relationships, It is a portal to pharmacological information and its main aim is to provide a searchable database with quantitative information on drug targets and the prescription medicines and experimental drugs available for them.

Teaching method
Teaching comprises four subject blocks (Gastrointestinal, Cardiovascular and Respiratory, Endocrine Glands and Osteoarticular System) which include lectures and tutorial sessions organized around four clinical patient processes (Gastrointestinal, Cardiovascular, Respiratory, and Endocrine Glands). with 6 sessions of 2 hours each. These tutorial sessions take place in small groups (16 students) and are guided by teachers of Pathophysiology and / or Pharmacology.
Evaluation method
Students' final evaluation includes two components with relative weights of 50%:
The distributed evaluation during the tutorial sessions that includes: participation in the sessions, presentations and discussion of individual learning needs and group presentation of the clinical cases workflow and summary.
The final exam consists of a written test (60 multi-choice questions) followed by an oral exam. The oral examination will be optional unless otherwise indicated by the chair of the curricular unit.
