Portuguese Renaissance Literature

Objectives

- To examine the letters of the Renaissance from Humanism to Mannerism.
- To discuss the profound change of the aesthetic and conceptual paradigms occurred in the 16th century.
- To address Portuguese literary creation of the 16th century in its cosmopolitan dimension.
- To acquire critical skills for the analysis of dramatic, lyrical and epic works of the 16th century according to fundamental references.
- To encourage the further exploration of the works of Gil Vicente, Sá de Miranda e Luís de Camões based on central contributions of recent criticism.
- To promote oral discussions and the production of written essays.
- To encourage debate and critical thinking aiming to the students' humanistic and civic education.

Teaching method

Classes will have a theoretical component that includes a reflection on the critical models for the study of the syllabus contents and a strong practical approach dedicated to the analysis and discussion of the selected literary works.

Evaluation method

a written essay (20%), Evaluation will include class participation and attendance(20%), and a written test at the end of the semester(60%)

Subject matter

1. Humanism, Renaissance and Mannerism.
2. The medieval heritage of Gil Vicente, the author's «novas invenções» and his relations with the Spanish and the French theatre: Auto da Índia and Comédia de Rubena.
3. Poetic renewal by Italian and classical imitation in a peculiar «maneira»: Francisco Sá de Miranda (the reflexivity of the sonnets and the critical and moral imperative of the eclogues and the verse letters) and Luís de Camões (the relation Nature/poetic experience of love and the reflection on Time and the «desconcerto do Mundo»).
4. Os Lusíadas in the Portuguese and European context of the 16th century and in light of the evolution of the hermeneutic paradigm from Jorge de Sena and Eduardo Lourenço; the critical review of the figure Vasco da Gama.
