Major Trends in the History of Music
Objectives
The student should:
a) develop methodological and conceptual skills in the area of the History of Western Music;
b) gain an overview of the principal issues, stylistic tendencies, personalities, institutions and musical genres of the History of Music;
c) learn the ability to contextualise the main musical phenomena of the different periods studied, from a historical, sociological and ideological perspective;
d) be aware of the principal musical repertoires of the various periods of the History of Music.

Teaching method
Theoretical and practical subject (60%/40%). The syllabus is made up essentially of three cycles of lessons that mutually support and reinforce each other: 1. The repertoires; 2. The periods; 3. People and places. Lessons are expositive, in which listening to musical examples forms a significant and integral element and in which discussion with the students is encouraged.
Evaluation method
a written test(50%), reflective reports and participation in class(20%), writing an assignment(30%)
Subject matter
Questions of periodisation in the History of Western Music from the Middle Ages to the Present. Constants in the analysis of musical phenomena down the ages. Specific aspects of culture and musical life in the Middle Ages, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical and Romantic periods and the 20th and 21st centuries. Stylistic and formal questions during the various periods. Contextualisation of the main musical phenomena of the different periods studied, from a historical, sociological and ideological perspective.
