Objectives

a) To acquire and consolidate the knowledge of musical theory;
b) To develop technique in musical writing;
c) To develop basic techniques of application of the knowledge to the keyboard of piano;
d) Consolidar as prácticas de entoação musical dos elementos da teoria;
e) To develop techniques of auditory recognition of theoretical elements in the examples of classical music, world music, world music, popular music, rock and jazz

Teaching method

The classes consist of 1. theoretical component, providing explanation by the lecturer of the elements that make up the content of the course, and 2. practical component, including a) auditory, b) written, c) sung and d) piano exercises. Lessons are both theoretical and practical, 20% being theoretical and 80% practical. The methodologies to be applied presuppose the simultaneous differentiation of difficulty levels of the proposed tasks.

Evaluation method

The evaluation is carried out by means of four short tests (25% x 4)(100%)

1. Introduction: music theory - conceptualization, methodological and terminological issues. 2. Pitch. a) Review of the types of tunning in art-music and folk-music of the various regions of the world. Classical tradition: tempered tuning; tone and halftone; enharmonic equivalents. Keyboard. Diatonic and chromatic scales. The system of solmization. b) Pitch notation: staff, clefs, accidentals. 3. The meter and the rhythm. a) Beats; measures; introduction to musical syntax. b) Rhythm´s notation. 4. Tonality; major and minor scales; relative scales; the circle o fifths, key signatures. 5. Intervals melodic and harmonic, simple and compound, diatonic and chromatic. Inversion of intervals. 6. Chords. Four types of triads; inversion of triads. Seventh chords and its inversions. Тonchord tones. 7. Harmonic functions; cadences; sequences. Modulation. 8. Introduction to music forms
