Geophysics
Objectives
Present a comprehensive overview of the fundamental principles of each major branch of geophysics: gravity, seismology, geochronology, thermodynamics, geoelectricity, and geomagnetism.
At the end the student must:
-know the main methods of geophysical prospecting, as well as understand the potential and limitations of each;
- be able to process, represent and interpret data from the application of the studied methods;
- master some laboratory and field techniques in geophysical prospecting;
- be able to transmit information, problem solving, critical reasoning and apply, in an autonomous way, theoretical knowledge in new situations.

Evaluation method
Article 1 - Mode of knowledge assessment
According to the FCT Knowledge Assessment Regulations, the assessment in “Geophysics” falls under the Continuous Assessment type.
Article 2 - Online Theoretical Component - TO
1. The evaluation of this component is carried out through proof of knowledge by tests or exam.
2. The dates of the evaluation moments and the information about the registration form (typically, registrations are accepted up to one week before the race) are found in the Clip.
3. Within the scope of continuous assessment, 2 tests will be carried out throughout the semester, whose classification will be rounded up to tenths.
4. The classification of this component (CT) is the arithmetic average, rounded to the nearest integer, of the marks obtained in the tests or the classification of the final exam.
5. Students who obtain a CT classification equal to or higher than 10 values obtain approval in the OP component.
6. The tests will take place in the distance evaluation format, using Moodle in a Respondus Monitor environment and the Lockdown Browser.
7. Up to one week before the exam, it will be indicated in the Clip, if it will be in person or remotely.
Article 3 - Theoretical-Practical Component online - OP
1. Theoretical-practical classes are mandatory for students without frequency, and are complementary to TO classes.
2. The evaluation of this component is done by solving problems, resolved in groups.
3. Statements of exercises for evaluation will be distributed at the end of classes on March 25, April 29, and June 7 on moodle and your resolutions must enter the moodle folder up to 48 hours later.
4. The average of the ratings obtained in the resolutions of the exercises will be rounded up to the units and contribute to the CE score.
Article 4 - Practical Component - P
1. Practical classes are mandatory for students without frequency; they will generally work online, except when previously the teaching team informs that the work (laboratory or field) is in person. These classes are complementary to the TO and OP classes.
2. The classification of the practical component CP corresponds to the grade obtained in the report of analysis of results of the field work, carried out in group.
3. If the classification in the report is higher than 9.5, the student obtains approval in the practical component.
Article 5 - Frequency
1. Students who actively participate in at least 2/3 of practical classes and theoretical-practical classes obtain frequency to the course unit.
2. The theoretical-practical and practical classes identified in the planning file with "Lab" are strictly mandatory for students without frequency.
3. In the next year, the frequency of the frequency will return to be only 2 years. This year, students who have obtained frequency for more than two years, are assigned ten values in the CP component.
4. Approval to the course unit requires obtaining frequency.
Article 6 - Final Classification
1. Students who frequently satisfy paragraph 5 of Art. 2, and paragraph 3 of Art. 4, obtain approval in the discipline.
2. The final classification (CF) of the students is the result of the following expression, approximated to the units:
CF = CTx0.6 + CEx0.2 + CPx0.2.
3. If and only if CF is greater than 9.5 values, in any of the previous points, an increase will be applied to this classification of up to one value, based on the performance obtained by each student in the individual questionnaires carried out in the theoretical classes.
4. Students who obtain a final grade higher than 16 are admitted to an additional exam (eg oral).
5. In the additional test mentioned in the previous number, students can increase or decrease the final grade with the guarantee of a minimum classification of 16 values.
6. The absence of the additional test referred to in the previous number reflects the student''s acceptance of the final grade of 16 points.
Article 7 - Grade improvement
1. Students wishing to improve their grade must comply, for this purpose, with the legal registration formalities.
2. The new final classification is obtained according to paragraph 2 of Article 6, considering the classification of the exam as the new CT classification.
3. The increase indicated in paragraph 4 of Article 6 does not apply to grade improvement.
4. Students who obtain a final classification, by improvement, higher than 16 values are subject to the conditions described in points 5 to 7 of the Final Classification.
Article 8 - Class Conduct
1. In online classes, students must identify themselves as follows: first name_name family - student number.
2. In order for everyone to benefit from the learning experience, students are required to respect the following in class:
The. Punctuality: Students must be present in the classroom at the beginning of the class. Teachers will be able to prevent the entry of students who arrive more than 5 minutes late;
B. Preparation of classes and participation in discussions: Active participation requires students to prepare the material presented and discussed in class, and to contribute to the discussions;
ç. Class participation: at least when participating, students must connect the camera and microphone.
Article 9 - Tests and Examination
1. Each test will focus essentially on all the material taught in the online theoretical classes until the class before the test.
2. Although the evaluation in the tests is not cumulative, and due to the nature of the subjects covered in this Curricular Unit, it is not excluded that an evaluation element uses knowledge regarding the subject evaluated in previous element (s).
3. If the assessment is in person, the timetable and rooms for the exam will be published in CLIP.
4. Students will only be able to meet you during the assessment test:
A. Writing material and blank paper;
B. Identification document with photograph;
C. Scientific, non-programmable, non-graphical calculating machine.
5. During the performance of the tests, it is not allowed to consult any personal or other elements, beyond the form distributed with the test.
6. If the proof is in person, it is not allowed to unpack the sheets of the notebooks with the statements.
7. The test will be canceled if paragraphs 4, 5 or 6 are not satisfied.
8. Fraud situations, at any time of assessment, will be dealt with as indicated in this Faculty''s knowledge assessment regulation.
9. If the evaluation moments happen in Moodle, more information will be given on that platform, about the process.
Article 10 - Others
When students contact teachers via email (email), they must indicate in the “Subject (Subject)” the following information: “Geophysics - Name - Student number - Subject”. No electronic messages will be answered with questions whose answer is contained in the previous Articles or on the curricular unit page in the Clip.
