Additionaly Geology for Teaching I
Objectives
The objective of the Curricular Unit is to provide students with the knowledge and tools needed to understand the position of Earth in the Solar System, and the differentiation of its interior, the major reason for the dynamics of its outermost layer, the lithosphere.
At the end of the course, students must have acquired knowledge, skills and competences that enable them to: 1) Recognize that Earth, one planet among many, is part of a Solar System in evolution; 2) Know the arguments and mechanisms put forward for the formulation of the theory of Plate Tectonics; 3) Recognize the causes and effects of mobility of the tectonic plates, generating forces that result in rock deformation; 4) Assimilate the concepts of the Wilson cycle and the Rock cycle; 5) Recognize and be able to analyze, identify and classify minerals and rocks resulting from internal geodynamics; 6) Be acquainted with the geological resources of Portugal that result from magmatism and metamorphism.

Teaching method
The concepts and theories are explained by the teacher with the aid of slides , typically the introductory parts of the curricular unit .
Laboratory and the field are used to understand the different issues: 1 ) table for analog simulation of deformation tectonic structures in various tectonic contexts , 2) field observation , interpretation and learning methods in the field geologist , measurement and fragile ductile structures (Arrábida ) 3) laboratories of minerals and rocks in hand specimens and petrographic microscopes for description and identification of minerals / rocks igneous / metamorphic ; 4 ) field, observation modes of occurrence of magmatic and metamorphic rocks ( Sintra ) ; 5 ) practical exercises .
Evaluation method
Evaluation in groups of 2 : presentation and discussion of a theoretical concept ( 30 % )+ a proposed experimental activity ( lab ) ( 20 % ) + delivery of a field book ( 20 % ) ; individual:reports, identification of rock hand specimen and petrographic microscope ( 30 % )
