Master Thesis in Geological Engineering
Objectives
The aim of this course is the development of experimental work and writing of the Master dissertation in Geological Engineering. The Dissertation enables students to apply in an integrated manner some of the acquired skills, that may be supplemented by self-study, and whose result is released with the completion of a scientific and technological report. This includes developing the capacity to conduct research activity, both supervised by the advisor and in autonomy, applying appropriate research methodologies, and the ability to develop work with a significant degree of originality. The publication of results at conferences and in quality technical journals is strongly encouraged as is a standard practice in the master''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''s degree in Geological Engineering from FCT-UNL

Prerequisites
The discussion of the MSc thesis requires that all curricular units are concluded.
Bibliography
Bibliography to be used depends on the research topics and his mostly recommended by the supervisors on case-by-case basis.
Teaching method
The activities performed within this unit will be undertaken by the student in direct interaction with the supervisor and may include the frequency of specific seminars, courses, etc.. Often the work is framed by research projects or contracts with companies. During two semesters (first in part-time, second in full-time) students must develop an original research and development work.
Evaluation method
The evaluation is based on the preparation and public defense of the dissertation. In order to increase the visibility of the work the preparation and publication of scientific articles is one of the factors considered during the assessment. The dissertation defense is conducted before a jury, composed of at least three elements. If the work has been developed in co-mentoring, the jury will have at least four elements.
Subject matter
In this unit, each student must perform its R&D work in accordance with the objectives set out in the dissertation proposal, approved by the Master in Geological Engineering Scientific Committee. In general, after the attribution of a supervisor, the work performed by the students is structured according to the following set of activities:
• Conclusion of the literature collation and elaboration of the state of the art
• Implementation of the research work that may include fieldwork, laboratory work, data analysis, mathematical modeling, etc.
• Validation of results
• Writing of the thesis and document review
• Public defense of the dissertation
