Leptospirosis and Lyme Borreliosis: Reemerging Diseases in the Global World

Objectives

  • Understand the (re)emerging epidemiological importance from the two zoonotic spirochetoses, with a particular focus on  the situation in Portugal, namely on Azores Archipelago;
  • Know and apply the current laboratory approaches (immunological and molecular) in order to improve laboratory diagnosis;
  • Interpret the laboratorial results versus the biology and pathogenesis of the involved agents (leptospires and borreliae) and their impacts on human population.

Bibliography

The students have access to the slides (PPT) of the classes, and to the links of videos, through an available platform (Moodle); to the Laboratory Manual prepared and updated in each edition of the Master, with the protocols and theoretical basis of each technique, to the bibliography, which will be complemented with other current bibliographic elements, during the Course.
