Seminar in Epidemiology

Objectives

At the end the students should be able to:

− Describe the purposes and uses of the main epidemiological methods;

− Describe the main types of epidemiological studies, the conditions for its application and weaknesses;

− Understand the principles of spatial analysis of health data;

− Understand the principles of sampling populations for use in epidemiology;

− Knowing how to define, calculate and interpret the main epidemiological measures of frequency, association and impact;

− Define the concept of risk, its main variants, and be able to interpret its meaning;

− Knowing how to define the concept of screening, describe the conditions for its application and validity measurements associated;

− Describe the concepts and applications of the concepts of bias and confounding and its use in the design, analysis and interpretation and epidemiological studies, as well as the discussion of causality;

Teaching method

This course includes theoretical and practical aspects, target to the research problems of each student. It is based on: theoretical-practical Lectures, individual works with presentations and group discussion; case studies.

The teaching methodology is focus on the application and development of epidemiological concepts. It is expected that students can, during lectures, develop and apply concepts through the exercises that will be proposed to them, but also through problems they will propose themselves based on their research.

Evaluation method
