Public Health Seminar II


To develop the required theoretical and technical skills to prepare, examine and evaluate health policies, programs and strategies according to an economic perspective.

To be able to present examples of economic concepts used in the health care field such as: opportunity cost; scarcity and priority; demand, supply and price; funding, payment and provision; efficiency and equity; economic evaluation.

Promote the analysis of models and practices concerning health policies.

Develop the strategic analysis and planning of interventions in the health care sector.

Use, with accuracy and proficiency, management tools in the analysis of problems and decision making.

Teaching method

Active participated learning, with indispensable reading of basic texts and discussion of topics or exercises, either in small groups or full class.

About half of the sessions will begin with a presentation by a teacher, followed by a presentation by a student and discussion of topics related to the subject under examination where students are encouraged to intervene.

The other sessions will be more practical with invited external speakers, with the presentation and discussion of themes relevant for the management of organizations and health systems.

Evaluation method

Assessment of commitment, work and participation (40%), made through observation of student participation and the presentation and discussion of topics and exercises in sessions.

Individual essay (60%) on one of the syllabus topics.
