Social Research Methods in Health

Objectives

At the end of the module, students should: (i) have acquired knowledge and skills in methods and techniques of scientific research, according to the qualitative approach, guaranteeing them autonomy in the design, planning, implementation and evaluation of empirical research projects in the field of social sciences in health; (ii) be able to identify and describe the logical and chronological key steps of the qualitative research process, including research designs (grounded theory, phenomenological analysis, case study) and qualitative samplig methods; (iii) know how to use some of the most common qualitative techniques of data collection (observation, interview, focus group; (iv) be able to carry out content analysis (thematic, grounded theory); (iv) and know how to present and discuss qualitative metidos and results

Teaching method

Teaching methods are based on theoretical and theoretical-practical sessions, including oral presentation, group discussion and exercises focusing the development of data collection tools, data analysis and critical analysis of qualitative studies.
The final evaluation results from: (i) the critical analysis of a paper in the field of health management, with a qualitative approach (75%); and (ii) consideration of attendance and active participation in classroom, including the response to small exercises in classroom or in e-learning sessions (25%).
