Thesis (Medicine/Biomedicine)

Objectives

The objective of this unit is the development of a research project in the relevant areas of the study cycle that will support an original thesis to be presented at the end of the study cycle. The student should acquire advanced scientific research skills, including: in-depth knowledge in the scientific area of work; the ability to formulate scientifically valid hypotheses; the design of an original research work that allows to test the hypotheses and analyze in a critical way the results obtained; and also the writing, presentation and discussion of the results obtained in the form of scientific articles and an original thesis.

Bibliography

There is main bibliography references in advance to which the student must necessarily resort. Each student should seek the appropriate bibliography for the development of the respective project by first resorting to discussions with the counselor and co-counselors and to systematic bibliographic research.

Teaching method

Given that program content is project-specific and that learning needs vary as the project evolves, it is not possible to demonstrate a link between pre-defined program content and learning objectives, nor to demonstrate such coherence a priori. In situations that prevent or compromise the fulfillment of the plan initially planned, the student should be able to find alternative options to continue the studies, either through the reformulation of the hypothesis, or finding perspectives or approaches that contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the area. At the end of the dissertation, the student must have acquired the competences that allow him/her to understand the research process, including the adequacy of the methodology to the experimental hypothesis, the importance of interdisciplinarity and the constraints and "unforeseen" that condition the entire research process.

The 1st year of the course has specific characteristics since it includes students in different situations that it is important to distinguish:

1.       Students who have a well-defined research project and supervisor at the entrance to the study cycle and who want to maximize the time dedicated to this project can dedicate 100% of the time to this project.

2.       Students who do not yet have a well-defined project and supervisor at the beginning of the study cycle should opt for an individualized course approved on a case-by-case basis by the UC administrator, which may include laboratory rotations, internships or participation in clinical research studies or epidemiological, or other similar activities.

Evaluation method

In any case, the student must submit a final report in the last month of the UC that will be evaluated.

Subject matter

The curricular unit is dedicated to the completion of the research project and the writing of an original doctoral thesis that will focus on a subject of investigation of student interest, taking into account the offer and the strategic areas of investigation of Nova Medical School. In an original research project, the evolution of the work program is not completely predictable because it depends on the results that are being obtained, so the program content is necessarily specific to each project and varies with its development.
