Opcional Livre
Objectives
The Free Elective CUs correspond to the most flexible component of the course and are provided and disseminated at the beginning of each academic year bearing in mind the offer of advanced courses available at NMS | CEDOC and associated institutions. These CUs will be in the areas of the various branches of the Doctoral Program, namely New Therapies, Chronic Inflammation, Populations Health, Nutrition and Chronic Diseases. The student must acquire advanced concepts in the scientific areas corresponding to the branches of the course. Students should be able to critically discuss the latest advances in the scientific area of the course and know how to use and apply the knowledge acquired to new situations and research context. Students should be able to identify and discuss the use of differentiated research methods and techniques for solving specific scientific questions within each advanced course.

Bibliography
Participants and guests will be provided with bibliometrics or other appropriate information. Where applicable the bibliography will consist of scientific articles available on the internet in appropriate databases. It will be sought in each edition of the course to provide the most recent scientific information. Students will be encouraged to share notes and information about the Course in virtual forums on computer platforms, to be created, of the "virtual blackboard" type.
Teaching method
The teaching methodology will preferably be based on a variable combination of workshops, research seminars, and tutorial follow-up. In all cases, teaching should always focus on the student and the knowledge and skills to be acquired based on research work. Typically Elective Curricular Units will involve a more theoretical component (seminars) and more practical components based on student work (workshops that may involve discussion of scientific articles, fictitious proposals for research projects, etc.). The evaluation will be based on the presentation and discussion of the work of the student (workshops) in a percentage of not less than 50% and in a written document that allows to measure the application of knowledge to concrete situations of investigation in the area of the course.
Evaluation method
Thus, the evaluation will be distributed by a written document to measure the application of knowledge to concrete research situations (50%) and the presentation and discussion of work in workshops (50%).
Subject matter
The Free Options cast to be integrated in the doctoral course must be approved by the course coordinator taking into account the alignment of the advanced course topics. It will also seek to ensure a sufficient diversity of courses preferably involving diverse experimental approaches avoiding redundancies in the curriculum.
The student must acquire advanced concepts in the scientific areas corresponding to the branches of the course. The courses that promote the critical sense of the student and promote the integration and application of knowledge in a research context are favored. Therefore, national and foreign researchers with recognized merit should be invited in their scientific areas.
