Emergency and Catastrophe Medicine

Objectives

Provide knowledge in the areas of Emergency Medicine (EM) and Disaster Medicine (DM). Indicate the approach strategies of the individual patient and emerging situations of multi-victims major disasters.

To know the reality in Portugal and its stakeholders, the INEM structures (technical and human resources), their processes and outcomes.

Develop skills in the approach of emergent patient, understanding the importance of education and training, the importance of acting in the adequate "timing", doing teamwork, how to triage patients, managing resources and the benefit of planning and preparing the response to such situations.

Know the teams involved in the hospital response to disasters, including: Emergency Departments, ICUs, how they act and what can we expect from them. What changes can and should do  the Hospitals in his adapt efforts to those exception situations. Hospital disaster plans and their integration with local, regional and national plans.

Teaching method

Theoretical-practical classes - participation of students with clinical cases.
Practical classes (clinical practice classes and nonclinical) - including intra visits and outpatient; practical exercises and shorter presentations with a more active participation of students.

Because of the constraints of the COVID-19 pandemic, classes may take place in two scenarios, using online applications:
1. Teaching in b-learning (blended-learning - with e-learning sessions associated with “face-to-face” sessions.
2. Teaching entirely in e-learning.

Evaluation method

Evaluation method: spread out over two weeks, with final assessment (exam).

 Continuous assessment:
 attendance and punctuality (50% in continuous assessment);
 participation in classes, including participation / presentation of group work
 (50% in continuous assessment);
The sum of the two worth 50% for the final grade.

 Exam, written test, 30 multiple choice questions, worth 50% for final classification.
1 st call and 2nd call:  official calendar . 

Attendance: apply the fault system in force in the FCM. The positive benefit is conditional on attendance of 2/3 of the practical lessons / theoretical and practical.
Supplementary scheme for students without the minimum attendance: monograph with oral discussion.

Subject matter

This Course takes place over two weeks with theoretic-practical and practical classes: clinical case discussions, exercise "table-top" and guided visits to the Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Emergency Medical Car (VMER) Car Intervention in Disasters (VIC), Emergency Patients Guidance Center (CODU), National Institute for Medical Emergencies (INEM).

Themes: Fundamentals of EM and DM; Types of disasters; high intensity and short duration and of low intensity and long-term situations; Humanitarian medicine; Hospital circuit; The ICU; CBRN and injuries explosives and firearms; Decontamination and protection; Transfer and transport of patients; The organization's response to the disaster; Natural phenomena; Screening, Communications and Resources; Response organization; Trauma; The hospital plans, municipal and national authorities; presentation syndromes; The concept of Integrated Medical Emergency System (SIEM) and the European Emergency Number (112).
