PhD in Translation Studies

Education objectives

Doctoral students will be trained in research in Translation Studies (TS): research in libraries, catalogues, bibliographies and various online media, constitution of corpus or corpora, definition of the topic to be dealt with in view of the state of the art, confrontation between methodologies and selection of the most adequate, construction of the appropriate contexts and the perfecting of methods of analysis. Specific skills to be developed in doctoral students:
a. agility in the theoretical-conceptual and methodological frameworks of TS, which will allow students to frame,
understand and analyse the phenomenon of translation;
b. ability to use the theoretical-methodological apparatus in a critical way;
c. ability to design and structure a research project in the field;
d. ability to develop autonomous research in the area of TS;
e. ability to communicate the results to peers;
f. ability to debate TS topics and methodologies within the scientific community.

Degree pre-requisites

Length: 8 semesters. Total credits: 240 credits (80 from curricular units + 160 credits from the non teaching component). Non teaching component modalities: Thesis. In Year 2, the Research Colloquium guides doctoral students in the preparation of a project to be presented and defended until the end of 2nd semester of Year 2. The 2nd semester includes the Spring School, in which doctoral students will be required to present a talk on a particular aspect of their research, and to discuss it with their peers.

Conditions of admittance

To be admitted to a doctoral programme of studies, the candidate should satisfy the conditions set forth in Portuguese legislation as well as fulfil at least one of the following requirements: a) Holders of a Master’s degree or legal equivalent in any area of studies; b) Holders of an Undergraduate degree or legal equivalent, with a minimum average of 16/20, who display a particularly relevant academic or scientific CV that is recognized as attesting to the ability to undertake this study cycle; c) Holders of a particularly relevant academic, professional or scientific CV that is recognised as attesting to the ability to undertake this study cycle. Candidates to the study cycle awarding the title of Doctor in Translation Studies will be selected by the Scientific Committee, through the assessment of the documents required by the application regulations, as well as an interview, with the agreement of the designated competent bodies of the educational institution to which they are seeking admission.

Evaluation rules

The cycle of studies leading to the degree of Doutor (Doctorate) includes following a doctoral programme that consists of course units aimed at providing training to do research, and the submission of an original doctoral thesis especially written for the purpose and which is appropriate to the nature of the branch of knowledge or speciality and which contributes to expanding the boundaries of knowledge. Grades for the seminar-type course units are awarded using a numerical scale ranging from 0 to 20. The final grade awarded to the doctoral course is expressed by Approved or Not Approved. The thesis is awarded a classification of Approved or Refused through a justified nominal vote with no abstentions permitted; if the thesis is approved, the jury then votes on a grade which may be Good, Good with Distinction or Very Good. The final qualification is awarded under the terms of Article 36, nº 2 of Decree-Law 74/2006, of 24 March, altered by Decree-Law n.º 107/2008, of 25 June, 230/2009, of 14 September, 115/2013, of 7 August, 63/2016, of 13 September, 65/2018, of 16 August.
