Travel Writing
Objectives
This Curricular Unit intends to present the characteristics, rules, problems and possibilities of travel writing, providing technical and theoretical instruments for the creation of travel texts. The Unit also aims to familiarize students with classic and contemporary authors of the genre, to convey a sense of the interest and pertinence of travel writing in the current world and to promote an awareness of the cultural, social and political issues raised by travel literature.
It is also the purpose of the Unit to create skills for collecting information and research while traveling, and for writing and structuring travel narrative texts, whether on analog or digital platforms.

Teaching method
The teaching methodologies of this Unit include expository classes, always supported by concrete examples, analysis of cases and published pieces, discussions and debates on the theoretical and practical issues raised by the various contents covered, execution of tasks of formative value and presentation, with discussion, of works carried out by the students.
Evaluation method
Evaluation Method - Continuous, individual evaluation, based on class participation. (20%), Practical assignment consisting of the presentation of a travel plan with a written project(40%), Travel narrative text, produced individually. (40%)
Subject matter
1. Theoretical and philosophical notions about the concepts of travel and traveller:
1.1 The meaning of travel literature at the time of Google Maps;
1.2 Brief history of Travel Literature. The Portuguese tradition, since the 16th century.
2. The travel narrative:
2.1 The travel narrative as a literary genre;
2.2 The travel narrative as a journalistic genre;
2.3 The sub-genres of Travel literature;
2.4 Travel writing as research on the World.
3. Field work:
3.1 Collection of information (observation, sources, testimonies, interviews, immersion, interpretation);
3.2 Registration techniques (taking notes, recorder, photo and video);
3.3 Logistical issues (transport, accommodation, guides, translators, fixers);
3.4 Culture shocks (how to deal with different traditions, customs, mentalities and cultures).
4. Writing:
4.1 Text structure;
4.2 Stylistic features;
4.3 Rhythms of the narrative (description, digressions, narration, scenes, dialogues, reflection);
4.4 Travel narrative on digital platforms;
4.5 The travel blog.
