Education objectives

1) Acquire in-depth knowledge and research capacity in the area of Women's Studies and Gender Studies;
2) To acquire knowledge and skills on women's rights, that enable civic action in response to new social needs;
3) Acquire skills for interaction between university knowledge and organizations operating in the relevant social problems in the area of specialization;
4) Acquire skills training throughout the life of the thematic specialty;
5) Acquire general and multidisciplinary training in the areas of Women's Studies and Studies on Gender;
6) Acquire ability to handle operational concepts of the study areas, within an interdisciplinary context using reference bibliography, domestic and international;
7) To acquire the ability to use the knowledge , concepts and methodologies acquired in solving new problems in new and unfamiliar situations, in wide multidisciplinary contexts related to the thematics' of Women's
Studies and Studies Gender;
8) Obtain knowledge and skills to prepare and present in oral and written scientific communication , according to academic criteria;
9) Get skills to present their conclusions, and the knowledge and arguments underlying them non specialized public.

Degree pre-requisites

Length: 3 semesters. Total credits: 93 credits (60 in course units of the study programme + 33 in the non-taught component). Types of non-taught component: Dissertation, Project Work, Practical Work Experience with Report. Number of credits from free-elective optionals: 10 credits (the student can obtain 10 credits from free-elective optionals in course units taught at post-graduate level at FCSH/UNL, or at any other national or foreign higher education institution with bilateral agreement.) The degree of «mestre» corresponds to the level 7 of the NQF and EQF-National Qualifications Framework/European Qualifications Framework.


Competencies:

- To acquire further knowledge and research competencies in the field of Women’s Studies and Gender Studies;
- To acquire competencies and knowledge about women’s rights to equip students for civic intervention in response to new social needs;
- To acquire competencies to enable academic knowledge to interact with organisations which intervene in social issues relevant to this area of specialisation;
- To acquire competencies for lifelong learning in this area of specialisation;
- To acquire general and multidisciplinary training in the field of Women’s Studies and Gender Studies;
- To acquire the competencies required to deal with operative concepts of the areas under study, within an interdisciplinary context, using a national and international reference bibliography;
- To acquire the ability to use the knowledge, concepts and methodologies acquired to solve new problems in new and unfamiliar situations, in a wide range of multidisciplinary contexts, related to the field of Women’s Studies and Gender Studies; h) To obtain knowledge and competencies to produce and present, in both spoken and written form, an academic paper in line with academic rules;
- To obtain competencies to present conclusions together with the knowledge and arguments underlying them to non-specialist audiences;
- To acquire competencies to enable students to design a piece of original research within the field of Women’s Studies and Gender Studies, mastering the respective methodologies and work instruments;
- To acquire competencies to enable students to present the results of their research in the form of a dissertation, or a professional application in the context of practical work experience and the writing of the respective report.

Conditions of admittance

Application and access conditions to the cycle of studies reflect the conditions established in the national legislation, namely: - to hold a licenciado degree or legal equivalent; - to hold a foreign academic degree recognized by the Scientific Council of NOVA FCSH; -to hold an academic, scientific or professional curriculum vitae recognized by the Scientific Council of NOVA FCSH. Applicants will be selected and ranked according to the criteria annually defined in the application edict.

Evaluation rules

A final grade, expressed as a number between 10 and 20 on a scale of 0 to 20 as well as its equivalent on the ECTS grading scale, is awarded for the post-graduate diploma. The final grade of the post-graduate diploma is the average, by credit, of the grades obtained in the course units in which the student obtained the 60 credits from the taught part of the Masters course. A final grade, expressed as a number between 10 and 20 on a scale of 0 to 20 as well as its equivalent on the ECTS grading scale, is awarded for the Masters degree. The final grade of the Masters degree will be the average of the final grade of the taught part of the course, weighted to 40%, and the grade awarded to the dissertation, project work or practical work experience report, weighted to 60%.
