Spanish and Latin American Contemporary Cultures


a) To deepen the knowledge of contemporary Spanish and Latin American cultures from an interdisciplinary perspective.
b) To explore the respective cultural contexts (historical, social, political, economic and artistic).
c) To problematize the concept of culture and critically reflect on cultural dynamics and practices.
d) To develop the ability to collect, select and interpret relevant, textual and non-textual information.
e) To encourage the production of specific judgments that take into account the social, scientific and ethical aspects associated with the object of study.
f) To enhance intercultural critical literacy, favoring the skills to understand texts, products and relationships between cultures.
g) To promote the appreciation of the linguistic and cultural diversity of the Spanish-speaking world.
h) To develop the ability to perform autonomous work in the interdisciplinary field of cultural analysis.

Teaching method

This discipline, guided by critical pedagogy, has an interdisciplinary approach that aims to contribute to the student's humanistic training, creating opportunities for critical thinking about contemporary Spain and Latin America. Students are expected to participate actively and continuously through different activities of analysis, interpretation and discussion (debates, oral presentations, reading of scientific articles, reviews of films and documentaries, photographs, music, podcasts and other types of texts).

a) Questioning the concept of culture and its impact on social representations of the Hispanic universe.
b) Key moments in the Hispanic world from the 20th century to the present.
c) Representative figures in the contemporary Hispanic world.
d) Cultural analysis that intersects history, politics, economics, audiovisual media, press, literature, music, gastronomy and plastic arts, among others.
e) Relationships between contemporary cultures and identities in Spain and Latin America.
f) Critical reading of the links between the own cultural perspectives and those of the cultures under study.
g) Main challenges and issues in the contemporary Hispanic world.
