General characterization

Degree pre-requisites

Duration: 2 years/4 semesters
Total credits: 120 credits (60 credits from curricular units + 60 credits from the non-teaching component)
Non-teaching component modes: Dissertation or Project Work or Internship with Report.
The student performs 50 credits in all the curricular units offered. The student also carries out 10 credits as free-elective optional (from curricular units of postgraduate level at FCSH/NOVA, UNL, or other national or foreign institutions of higher education under agreement).
In the 3rd semester the student must attend a follow-up seminar for the non teaching component (5 ECTS).

The degree of «mestre» corresponds to the level 7 of the NQF and EQF-National Qualifications Framework/European Qualifications Framework.



Competencies:

a) To become aware of knowledge already acquired and learning gaps with regard to the 1st cycle and to promote the acquisition of new knowledge;
b) To establish dialogue with teachers/supervisors when defining the programme for knowledge acquisition and the forthcoming research options;
c) To enhance the ability to be integrated into programmes and environments of interpersonal cooperation in a specific research area;
d) To acquire knowledge that enables understanding and management, on an international/global scale, of the process for the acquisition/production of in-depth knowledge in the chosen area of specialisation;
e) To develop and extend the knowledge acquired in the 1st cycle in the chosen area of specialisation;
f) To creatively apply the knowledge acquired and to raise questions, managing heuristic information capital and mastering the hermeneutics and patrimony of the History discipline covering this area of specialisation;
g) To acquire the ability to understand and solve problems, including in unfamiliar or new areas, through using the knowledge capital obtained and a spatio-temporal comparative perspective;
h) To be able to operationalise the knowledge acquired in multiple ways – knowledge integration, resolution of concrete questions, solution proposal, issuing of opinions in situations of limited or incomplete information;
i) To acquire the ability to plan, carry out and present, in both spoken and written form and in accordance with the parameters of the discipline, a contribution towards historiographic knowledge based on research concerning a specific problem, or a project applying historical knowledge and the research competencies inherent to the development of cultural and socio-economic goals;
j) To acquire competencies which enable students to report narratively the results of their research in accordance with the parameters of the discipline and, simultaneously, in a way that is accessible and understandable to a non-specialist audience;
k) To acquire competencies which enable sustainable, continuous and permanent lifelong learning of an autonomous and self-directed nature;

Conditions of admittance

Application and access conditions to the cycle of studies reflect the conditions established in the national legislation, namely: - to hold a licenciado degree or legal equivalent; - to hold a foreign academic degree recognized by the Scientific Council of NOVA FCSH; -to hold an academic, scientific or professional curriculum vitae recognized by the Scientific Council of NOVA FCSH. Applicants will be selected and ranked according to the criteria annually defined in the application edict.

Evaluation rules

A final grade, expressed as a number between 10 and 20 on a scale of 0 to 20 as well as its equivalent on the ECTS grading scale, is awarded for the post-graduate diploma. The final grade of the post-graduate diploma is the average, by credit, of the grades obtained in the course units in which the student obtained the 60 credits from the taught part of the Masters course. A final grade, expressed as a number between 10 and 20 on a scale of 0 to 20 as well as its equivalent on the ECTS grading scale, is awarded for the Masters degree. The final grade of the Masters degree will be the average of the final grade of the taught part of the course, weighted to 40%, and the grade awarded to the dissertation, project work or practical work experience report, weighted to 60%.
