Education objectives

The MA in Sociology aims at the acquisition by students of the following knowledge
and skills:
1) In-depth knowledge and understanding of theoretical orientations of contemporary Sociology, its principles, methodological and technical research tools and specialized approaches of one of the areas of scientific and professional application;
2 ) The ability to apply these concepts and tools to the analysis of social phenomena and reflective intervention within the chosen area of specialization, as well as the ability to communicate clearly about knowledge and research outcomes to
diverse audiences;
3) To acquire skills and thorough knowledge of multidisciplinary issues, of social, political and organizational problems that sociological knowledge entails, and particularly in the area of specialization chosen by the student;
4) To pursuit advanced research training, particularly at doctoral level.

Degree pre-requisites

Duration: 2 years/4 semesters.
Total credits: 120 credits (60 credits from curricular units + 60 credits from the non-teaching component).
Non-teaching component modes: Dissertation or Project Work or Internship with Report.
A full-time student is expected to accomplish 50 ECTS in all the curricular units offered. The student also carries out 10 credits as free-elective optional (from curricular units of postgraduate level at FCSH/NOVA, UNL, or other national or foreign institutions of higher education under agreement).
In the 3rd semester the student must perform a follow-up seminar from the non teaching component (5 ECTS).
The degree of «mestre» corresponds to the level 7 of the NQF and EQF-National Qualifications Framework/European Qualifications Framework.


Competencies:

a) To acquire in-depth knowledge and awareness of theoretical guidelines in contemporary sociology, the methodological principles and tools and techniques of academic research, and specialised approaches within an applied professional and academic area;
b) To acquire the ability to apply these concepts and tools to the analysis of social phenomena and reflective practice within the scope of the chosen area of specialisation, as well as the ability to communicate knowledge and research results in a clear manner to diverse publics;
c) To acquire competencies for interdisciplinary questions of a social, political and organisational nature applied to sociological knowledge, particularly in the area of specialisation chosen by the student:
i) planning and coordination of specified technical tasks within organisations;
ii) planning, diagnosis and resolution of complex problems involving applied research;
iii) the setting up of means to monitor and evaluate national public policies and local projects;
iv) the filling of graduate technical posts with coordinating functions operating with a high degree of autonomy;
v) performance in intellectual and academic professions, including the planning and carrying out of specific research tasks under supervision;
vi) performance in tasks to create and produce knowledge content under pressure for different publics and means of communication;
vii)to carry out advanced training to prepare for research work at doctoral level.

Conditions of admittance

Application and access conditions to the cycle of studies reflect the conditions established in the national legislation, namely: - to hold a licenciado degree or legal equivalent; - to hold a foreign academic degree recognized by the Scientific Council of NOVA FCSH; -to hold an academic, scientific or professional curriculum vitae recognized by the Scientific Council of NOVA FCSH. Applicants will be selected and ranked according to the criteria annually defined in the application edict.

Evaluation rules

A final grade, expressed as a number between 10 and 20 on a scale of 0 to 20 as well as its equivalent on the ECTS grading scale, is awarded for the post-graduate diploma. The final grade of the post-graduate diploma is the average, by credit, of the grades obtained in the course units in which the student obtained the 60 credits from the taught part of the Masters course. A final grade, expressed as a number between 10 and 20 on a scale of 0 to 20 as well as its equivalent on the ECTS grading scale, is awarded for the Masters degree. The final grade of the Masters degree will be the average of the final grade of the taught part of the course, weighted to 40%, and the grade awarded to the dissertation, project work or practical work experience report, weighted to 60%.
