Political Systems

Objectives

a) To study different types of political systems, combining a theoretical analysis with an empirical approach.


b) To examine the historical evolution of political systems in distinct political context and geographical regions;


c)To identify the variation of institutional configuration of democratic regimes and non democratic political systems.


d) To analyze recent trends of political system change and, in particular, to discuss problems and challenges of contemporary democratic regimes.

Teaching method

Lectures (60%) with practical examples based on the empirical discussion of the main arguments and hypotheses (20%) and students’ presentation of the selected readings delivered at the beginning of the course (20%).

1.Political systems: forms and organization of power. Institutions and political systems.


2. Non-democratic political systems: totalitarianism, authoritarianism and hybrid regimes.


3. Democratic political system: presidentialism, parliamentarism and semi-presidentialism.


4. Relatios between political systems and citizens: direct democracy, participation and political attitudes


5. Evolution of democratic regimes and contemporary trends.
