Contemporary Portuguese History (20th Century)
The objectives of this course are to learn, understand and know how to interpret the history of Portugal in the period between the crisis of the 1890 Ultimatum and the Portuguese Revolution of April 25, 1974, comprising the study of PREC; to develop the understanding and the ability to reflect critically on the period and on the reasons that determined the phases of the Portuguese history on the period under analysis, to know the main and most current historiographical interpretations related to the topics studied; to know the basic bibliography produced on the history of Twentieth-Century Portugal; to know the main historical documents and to be able to analyse and interpret them, understanding them in their historical and cultural context; to develop oral and written capacities, integrating vocabulary and a conceptual discourse appropriate to the discipline; to acquire knowledge and skills capable to enable a deeper study of the subjects addressed.

Theoretical and practical classes, based on masterly exposures and the discussion of topics by students based on the analysis of documents, maps, charts and the use of audio-visual media. The planning and scheduling of activities is defined, presented and distributed at the beginning of the academic cycle. The presentation of the subjects, accompanied by the identification, in the classroom and online, documents, sources and bibliography, and other resources, including web, it assumes and appeals, beyond the expository and explanatory dimension, scenarios of interpretation, content questioning and discussion.
Frequency test, with access to books and support materials(40%), Participation and written essay (10%+10%)(20%), The written assignment might consist on an exercise of reflection and synthesis of a topic. The topic is decided with the Professor, prior to the presentation and discussion of a work plan with the Professor and in class.(40%)
1. The crisis of the “fontista” development model and the political alternatives that elicited the context of emergence that changed the Republican Party. The place of the Colonies in the activity of the Portuguese State.
2. The Republic, before, during and after the First World War characterizing the extension of the State in the political-institutional system, the religious issue, the social issue and the question of the War and Portugal’s participation.
3. The cycle of Portuguese authoritarianism in its various aspects (Military Dictatorship, National Dictatorship and the New State), between the chronological marks of the military movement of 1926 and of the military coup of April 25 1974 that ended the authoritarian regime.
4. The Portuguese Revolution 1974/75 until the process of democratic institutionalization in 1976.
