Renaissance Art History


1.Knowledge of art and architecture subjects and problems of the Renaissance and  Maneirist  art in the 15th and 16th Centuries.  2.Knowledge of the most important patronage and artistic achievements in Italy, as the norm  creator, and the North of Europe.  3.Knowledge and reconnaissance of stylistic and cultural aspects of the most relevant artists related to the Renaissance  and Maneirist aesthetic principles.  4.Knowledge of some historians and useful History of Art books about this period and artists. 5.Capacity of writing a short essay about these matters.

Teaching method

Teatching methodologies are incorporated in the proceedings of Art History as a discipline based upon the consideration of the works and languages inherit to visual culture throughout the centuries. Embracing problems of architecture and urban history, painting, sculpture and some aspects of decorative arts, lectures should communicate some skills and methodological practice. So, they are organized by a sequence of slides showed in a power-point device, sometimes associated to commented texts.

Evaluation method

Evaluation Method - a book or a part of a book review (8pp.)(25%), a file of an art work(25%), a test on all the syllabus(50%)

Subject matter

1. The concept of Renaissance, its periodization and art historiography. Humanism and ancient culture recovery. 2. The formulations of Tuscan Art in the fourteenth century and the significance of the work of Giotto and his followers. 3. The definition of linear perspective and the polemic against Internatiional Gothic in France. Brunelleschi, Masaccio and Donatello. 4 The systematization of the new culture of “Quattrocento” and its creation centers in the Italian Peninsula. The scope of Alberti and Piero della Francesca´s works. 5. Flemish painting and the questioning of a Northern Renaissance. The realism and the symbolism of the creations of Van Eyck Hugo van der Goes. 6.The patronage and the great artistic achievements in the Lorenzo de Medici time. The cult of antiquity and Neo-Platonism. 7. The Second Renaissance and programs of papal Rome. The paths of Bramante, Raphael, Michelangelo and Sangallo.
