History of Art: Classical and Late Antiquity in Portugal


- Analyze and understand the applicability of the concepts of the Art of Classical Antiquity and Late Antiquity, as well as the High Middle Ages to the territory currently Portuguese.
- Identify and understand the main artistic achievements produced in the territory during the II to X centuries in present Portuguese territory.
- To understand the relations between these artistic achievements and the art produced in other geographies and in identical chronologies;
- To understand the main historiographical problematizations on the defining concepts of historical periods and styles from Classical (Roman) and Late Antiquity (paleochristian), passing through the Early Middle Ages (Suevo, Visigothic and Mozarabic) and art of Christian territorial expansion (Asturian and Leonese) in Portuguese territory.

Subject matter

To promote the knowledge of the simultaneous historical and artistic evolution without watertight limits and without definitive ruptures, allowing the understanding of the continuities and discontinuities between Antiquity and the Middle Ages.
